Why vibration can provide useful warning
Rotating equipment produces repeatable vibration patterns when it is operating normally. Changes in amplitude, frequency, or phase can indicate developing unbalance, misalignment, looseness, bearing damage, gear problems, or structural issues.
The value is not the sensor by itself. The value is the warning time it creates for a decision: inspect, plan a repair, order a part, adjust operation, or continue monitoring.
Start with the assets where warning matters
Prioritize equipment with high production consequence, limited redundancy, long repair lead time, or a history of repeat failures. Do not begin by instrumenting every asset. A focused route on a small number of critical machines is easier to establish and learn from.
Collect repeatable measurements
- Measure at consistent points and directions.
- Record operating speed, load, process conditions, and recent maintenance.
- Trend the same measurement over time instead of relying only on a single alarm.
- Use spectra and time waveform information when overall values require diagnosis.
- Document the finding and the action taken in the work system.
Turn a signal into a maintenance decision
A reading is not a work order by itself. Define alarm and alert rules, identify who reviews the data, and set a response window based on the consequence and expected progression. A condition-monitoring program needs planning, parts, and craft capacity ready to respond to what it finds.
Connect condition monitoring to root cause
Replacing a bearing may restore the machine but leave the cause in place. Review installation quality, lubrication, alignment, foundation condition, operating practices, and contamination. The best programs use monitoring findings to improve the asset strategy rather than simply create more corrective work.
